The program provides social work consultation and volunteer assistance enabling older adults to maintain their quality of life and dignity. Volunteers provide a connection with the community via home visits, assistance with grocery shopping, and transportation. Social work consultation aides in developing a long-term care plan covering issues related to health, disability, finances, housing, familial concerns, legal questions, and in-home needs. The CFRT is a diverse multidisciplinary group of professionals who come together to understand the multifaceted factors surrounding the death of a child and work to prevent future deaths.

This team is comprised of coroners/medical examiners, pediatricians, law enforcement, county health departments, CPS, OCFS, prosecution, and mental health professionals in Delaware, Otsego and Schoharie Counties. Reviews and prevention activities are offered to residents of those three counties. Age and other requirements may apply.

What type of prevention activities does the group promote?

Currently, the team supports the following prevention activities:

  • Bicycle helmet and general safety (under 18)
  • Safe Sleep which includes educational materials and free Pack ‘n Plays. Baby web cams are also available in certain situations
  • Water Safety educational materials and a limited supply of life vests (under 18)
  • ATV Safety which includes an online educational course and free helmet and goggles upon completion (10-17)
  • Home Safety which includes carbon monoxide/smoke detectors, furniture straps, baby gates, outlet covers (for households with children under 18)
  • Child abuse prevention education

Supplies are limited and other safety initiatives may be addresses as needed by the community.

The agency has grown through the years to meet the changing needs of the children, adolescents, and families in our communities. Making a difference in people’s life is what the volunteer ombudsmen do on a regular basis. The Long Term Care Ombudsman Program operated through Catholic Charities Senior and Caregiver Support Services serves residents of 93 different facilities throughout ten counties in our Diocese. Ombudsmen visit an assigned nursing home or assisted living facility on a weekly basis. Volunteer ombudsmen help residents and their families understand and exercise their rights to quality of care and quality of life. Volunteers have a made a world of difference in residents’ lives by improving communication between facility staff and residents, encouraging changes in activities to provide more personalized choices, increased quality of care by bringing issues to the facility’s attention and helping to resolve issues and complaints.

Community Maternity Services provides in-home and community-based respite services for children with special mental health needs and their families residing in Albany, Schoharie, Otsego, Warren and Washington Counties.

Ongoing Respite Services

Planned respite for children diagnosed with Serious Emotional Disturbance to provide support to the parent(s) of the child. Respite will take place in the home or in the community. It typically occurs after school hours or on the weekend.

Crisis Respite Services

Short-term weekly respite for children and families experiencing a crisis or critical transition period. Respite takes place in the child’s home or in the community (two hours per week during a crisis).

The Nutrition Outreach and Education Program (NOEP) provides one-on-one assistance with applying for SNAP benefits, offering free, confidential prescreening to help you determine if you’re eligible. You’ll also receive information on other programs to help stretch your food budget.

The Nutrition Outreach and Education Program (NOEP) promotes the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (formerly Food Stamps) through: community outreach; collaboration with local social agencies; formal NOEP presentations to a diverse array of social/business agencies and clubs; direct client assistance involving “pre-screening” for potential program eligibility and extensive help in applying for and maintaining benefits; and support/advocacy for clients as they navigate the system with the bulk of the time committed to direct client assistance.

Cleaning out a home, or redecorating your own? We carry all types of household items from lamps, knick-knacks, linens, dishes and glassware, furniture, electronics, and seasonal items.

Open year-round, come in and shop to find one-of-a-kind items and gifts. Thrift Shop inventory is all donated and is offered to shoppers at bargain prices.

Catholic Charities Thrift Shop gladly accepts donations during business hours. Arrangements can also be made to pick up your donations for a small fee.

Drop in Warming stations are available in Otsego, Schoharie, and Montgomery counties, from November 1st through March 31st.
