Leave Your Legacy with FreeWill

Creating a will is important for everyone and can be useful regardless of your estate size. It’s a way to support the people and causes that are important to you, ensure your wishes are known, and save your loved ones the stress and cost of intestate probate proceedings.

To support your estate planning, Catholic Charities has partnered with FreeWill. In just 20 minutes, you can create your legally binding last will and testament. FreeWill gives you the option to include Catholic Charities in your planning by easily making a bequest to benefit our work in supporting individuals living in poverty for years to come.

Vehicle Donation

Do you have an old, unwanted vehicle taking up space in your driveway? Donate it to Catholic Charities of the Diocese of Albany! We are pleased to introduce a hassle-free way to help those in need. Donate your car, truck, motorcycle, boat, or other vehicle to the Catholic Charities Vehicle Donation program. We will tow the vehicle at no charge to you. We sell it. You receive a tax receipt.

The Stewardship of Your Gift

As one of the nation’s most efficient nonprofits, 88 cents of every dollar donated goes straight to social services that help our neediest neighbors. We take our commitment to our mission and the donors who support that mission very seriously. That’s why we openly provide access to our financial records. For more information, you can view and download our Annual Report. If you have any questions regarding our financial records or policies, please contact us.

Additional Ways to Give

Bequests

Making a gift to the Catholic Charities Diocese of Albany through your will is a powerful way to make a difference. Your bequest helps ensure that our social services—services that are vital to those among us who are poor, hungry, elderly, isolated, and disabled—will be there when they are needed. The bequest is deductible for federal estate tax purposes.

Making a bequest from a will or a living trust is simple. You do not have to rewrite your will or trust documents. You can add an amendment, called a codicil, to your will or trust documents. For your convenience, we have provided some language that your attorney may review:

"I give, devise and bequeath to Catholic Charities of the Diocese of Albany, the sum of _____ dollars ($_____) for the benefit of its general support (or specify the specific program you wish to support)."

Instead of naming a specific amount, you may state a percentage of your estate, a percentage of the remainder of the estate after you have provided for your heirs.

Please call the Catholic Charities Development Office at 518-453-6650 if you have questions or need assistance.

Gifts of Stock

Benefits for you and Catholic Charities of the Diocese of Albany

Your gift of stock directly supports your neighbors in need, strengthening our community for all. Moreover, your contribution also brings tax benefits to you and your family.

Gifts of appreciated stocks and bonds offer two tax advantages to donors. On stocks held for more than one year, you may be able to avoid paying capital gains tax on the appreciated value. Your gift is also considered tax-deductible based on the value of the stock at the time of your donation. It’s a win-win!

For more information or for help making your gift of stock, please contact Kathy Trudeau, Chief Operating Officer, by email at This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it. or by calling 518-453-6650.

To properly transfer stock as a gift, your broker will need the information found in the Catholic Charities Stock Transfer document.

Annuities

A Meaningful Way to Sustain Vital Social Services

The Charitable Gift Annuity enables you to transfer cash or marketable securities to the Catholic Charities of the Diocese of Albany in exchange for an immediate income tax deduction (the year you make your gift) and guaranteed fixed payments to you for life. But most importantly, your Charitable Gift Annuity is a meaningful way to partner with us as we reach out to each individual in need – transforming families, neighborhoods, and the lives of our communities.

A gift annuity is simple to create. You fund your annuity with a gift of cash or stock. You are then paid a guaranteed fixed amount, monthly, quarterly, semi-annually, or annually for life – you choose what works best for you.

Annuities generate an immediate charitable tax deduction and can partially bypass capital gains tax. Your gift annuity can even provide payments for a spouse or other beneficiary of your choosing. Annuity rates vary with age. A charitable annuity named for the benefit of Catholic Charities of the Diocese of Albany can provide you with fixed, guaranteed payments and the satisfaction of knowing that you are making a significant future gift to sustain our vital social services.

We’re here to answer your questions. Please contact the Development Office with any questions you may have by phone at 518-453-6650.

Real Estate

Tax Savings that Transforms Lives

Gifts of real estate are a profound and meaningful way to support the Catholic Charities of the Diocese of Albany and are not limited to personal residences. They include investment or commercial properties, agricultural properties, parcels of undeveloped land, and other properties.

In most circumstances, your charitable contribution is based on the appraised value of the real estate at the time the gift is transferred to Catholic Charities of the Diocese of Albany. On an appreciated property, you can avoid capital gains tax by donating the real estate to Catholic Charities of the Diocese of Albany before it is sold.

If you are considering making a gift of real estate to Catholic Charities of the Diocese of Albany or if you have any questions, please contact the Development Office at 518-453-6650.

Volunteering

What will you accomplish by volunteering with Catholic Charities? You will help those in need feel important and cared for. Especially if you choose an opportunity to directly interact with the people, you will enhance their lives by initiating social relationships. This is incredibly important to people who are often "invisible" and "avoided." Friendly interactions boost self-confidence, facilitate a sense of belonging, and promote happiness. Also, you will help create a connection between the poor and vulnerable and the broader community.

Upcoming Events

A great way to support Catholic Charities is by attending or sponsoring one of our events. With the help of community partners, Catholic Charities hosts golf tournaments, fundraising events, and our annual gala (Gala for Good), all to raise money to help the poor and vulnerable.
